The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit held on September 3 lived up to its majestic reputation. Bishop Griese presided over this year’s mass, along with most of our Jesuits at St. Ignatius and even Deacon McKenna. The Freshman Class of 2008 processed into St. John’s Cathedral to the beautiful wind piping of Mr. Brennan. However, something seemed to be missing in our celebration, our willingness to sing for the greater glory of God. In the days prior to the mass, our notorious choral director, Fr. Guiao, reviewed the songs to be sung at the mass with all the theology classes in the hope that we might show St. John’s Cathedral how we can really worship through resonating sound. Bishop Griese, however, did not sense our willingness to sing; and he alluded to the fact that our students scream their heads off at football games but they refuse to sing at Mass. Perhaps Bishop Griese may have exaggerated a little bit. The atmosphere at the cathedral seemed to be pleasant, not drab and weary by any means. The St. Ignatius Chorus led the student body in song magnificently. Our teachers, for the most part, were complementary of our behavior and responses at the celebration. Nevertheless, students should make an effort to not only sing at mass for our own good, but also to inspire others to worship at our Masses. |
