First comes the famous Limbaugh quote from Time about the alleged abuses, in which he stated, “This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation… You ever hear of a need to blow some steam off?” Absolutely, Rush. The first thing I do when I’m pressured by an AP test is to drag naked Iraqis around on a leash. Don’t get me wrong; everyone does need to blow off steam. And these military policemen, according to reports of prison overcrowding and poor training, were definitely under more stress than perhaps any of us can imagine. But that’s no excuse. Look at the countless GI’s, undoubtedly under fire just as the MP’s were, yet who did not need to resort to such inhuman methods to relax themselves. Another of Limbaugh’s points is that these abuses really aren’t that bad – “We had these pictures of homoeroticism that look like standard good old American pornography, the MTV awards, the Britney Spears and Madonna concerts or whatever.” Limbaugh is correct that these prison abuses are not nearly as ghastly as Saddam Hussein’s executions of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Nonetheless, it is a bit of an understatement to compare the abuses at Abu-Gharib to “good old American pornography.” Saddam was unbelievably cruel, yes; but we’re the ones taking the moral high ground in the war. Finally, Limbaugh states on May 6 , 2004: “And we hear that the most humiliating thing you can do is make one Arab male disrobe in front of another. Sounds to me like it’s pretty thoughtful. Maybe the people who ordered this are pretty smart. Nobody got hurt. Nobody got physically injured. Maybe the people who executed this pulled off a brilliant maneuver.” Unbelievable. A “brilliant maneuver.” Please, tell me just how “brilliant” this maneuver was. It’s not as if America’s reasons for going to war haven’t already been questioned as a result of the abuses themselves. Now we have talk show hosts justifying the barbaric actions? How can we possibly tell the world that we’re fighting this war for reasons of morality, when we are making human pyramids out of naked Iraqis – and then saying it’s ok? I am livid. And while I know this is just one (incorrect) talk show host, I don’t want him representing America. (Quotes courtesy of rushlimbaugh.com) |
